Our Collective Responsibility: Embracing the 150 Sexually Abused Children in Navajo County as "Our Children"

In the heart of our community lies a stark reality that demands our attention and action – the presence of over 150 sexually abused children in Navajo County every year. As your Navajo County Attorney, I am deeply committed to child advocacy, I believe it is our collective responsibility to recognize these children as "our children." I invite you to join me in embracing this responsibility and taking meaningful steps to protect, support, and uplift these young lives.

Understanding the Impact. The statistics paint a distressing picture – one that cannot be ignored. Behind each number lies a child who has endured unimaginable pain and suffering. As a community, we cannot stand by and allow these children to bear their burdens alone. By acknowledging them as "our children," we commit to taking action that ensures their safety, well-being, and future.

Breaking the Cycle: When we recognize sexually abused children as "our children," we reject the notion of indifference. By intervening and providing support, we break the cycle of abuse and work towards a brighter future for each child.

Creating a Supportive Network: As a community, we can create a safety net that envelops these children with care and compassion. By becoming personally involved with the Navajo County Family Advocacy Center, law enforcement, schools, and other organizations, we ensure that these children have access to the resources and assistance they need.

Embracing Our Responsibility.

Reporting and Supporting: If you suspect or witness child abuse, it is imperative to report it immediately. Every report matters and can make a significant difference in a child's life. By reporting, you become a vital part of the network that safeguards "our children."

Advocacy and Education: Embracing these children as "our children" requires advocating for policy changes that protect and empower them. Educate yourself about the organizations and causes advocating on behalf of children, supporting better policies, then join forces with them. Additionally, engaging in community education efforts about child sexual abuse and prevention helps create a culture of awareness and action. Where do you show up in the community? Where can you lend your voice?

Providing a Listening Ear: As adults, we have the power to provide a listening ear and a supportive presence to children who have experienced abuse. By creating an environment where they feel safe to share their experiences, we validate their feelings and contribute to their healing journey. Look for opportunities to volunteer. Seek training on being a child advocate.

Promoting Child Advocacy Centers: The Navajo County Family Advocacy Center plays a pivotal role in supporting abused children. By supporting and promoting the Navajo County Family Advocacy Center, you contribute to the comprehensive care and healing of "our children."

It is time for us to unite in a shared commitment – to embrace the 150 sexually abused children in Navajo County as "our children." By doing so, we pledge to provide them with the protection, care, and support they deserve. Here is a list of organizations and resources (https://www.ncfac.org/what-shouls-i-do/how-to-protect-your-child) across Navajo County that serve “our children,” many of which welcome volunteers or other forms of support. Let us stand together, shoulder to shoulder, in the pursuit of justice, healing, and a future where every child thrives.
